The Rome Community Foundation, in collaboration with the SFM SKATEPARK PROJECT and the City of Rome, is on a mission to construct a waterfront skatepark on the Erie Canal. This endeavor isn’t just about building ramps and rails—it’s about building resilience, community, and a brighter future for our youth.
The genesis of this project is deeply rooted in loss. The passing of a beloved member of the Rome community, Stone Mercurio, to suicide shook the town to its core, shedding light on the mental health struggles faced by today’s youth. In the face of adversity, Rome has chosen to respond with unity and action. Parents are engaging in vital conversations with their children, and teenagers are stepping up to advocate for mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
At the heart of this movement lies a simple yet profound idea: a skatepark as a sanctuary.
