Introduction: A Two-Century-Old Welcome
Imagine the excitement of 1825: crowds lining dusty roads, church bells ringing, and bands playing as America’s “favorite Frenchman”—Marquis de Lafayette—rolled into town. Now, fast-forward 200 years. On June 10, 2025, Utica invites you to relive that unforgettable moment. Whether you’re a history buff, a curious student, or a grandparent looking for a day of family fun, this bicentennial celebration has something for everyone.
More Than a Soldier: Lafayette’s Early Adventures
You might know Lafayette as George Washington’s trusted lieutenant, but did you know he arrived in America at just 19? He sailed across the Atlantic in 1777, determined to fight for liberty even before his own country was in danger. Over the next eight years, he proved himself in battles like Brandywine and Yorktown—earning both medals and lifelong friendships. Moreover, Lafayette’s vision extended beyond war. He championed social reforms, fought against slavery, and dreamed of a nation where freedom wasn’t just a buzzword.

A Hero’s Return: The Farewell Tour of 1824–1825
Nearly half a century later, Lafayette made what became known as his Farewell Tour. From August 1824 through September 1825, he visited every state in the Union—24 in total. Why? To thank Americans for supporting the Revolution and to witness firsthand how their young republic had grown. He received thunderous cheers, 50-gun salutes, and heartfelt speeches at every turn. In fact, newspapers dubbed him “The Nation’s Guest,” and he basked in the adoration of a people he helped free.
Why Utica? Lafayette’s Mohawk Valley Connection
But what brought Lafayette to our own backyard? During that grand tour, he paused in the Mohawk Valley—Utica’s region—where he shared stories of the battlefield and listened to local leaders. Today, we honor that visit because Utica played a key role in the Erie Canal era, which itself transformed America. In a way, Lafayette’s legacy and our city’s spirit both celebrate ambition, unity, and innovation.
