ONE MAN’S JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE, INNOVATION, AND STRENGTH
Each year on June 20, the world celebrates World Refugee Day, the international day to honor people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. As the world celebrates Refugee Day, it’s essential to spotlight the remarkable journey of individuals who have overcome adversity to thrive in new lands. Meet Ujj, a shining example of resilience, determination, and entrepreneurship.
Originally from Nepal, Ujj found himself in Utica in 2018, seeking refuge and opportunity. Starting from the humble position of a dishwasher, Ujj’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work and ambition. Today, he not only co-owns a small business, Muju, with his wife Grace, a fellow refugee from Bhutan but also manages Utica Tax, LLC, a thriving enterprise serving over 3000 families and businesses across New York and beyond for eight years.
But Ujj’s ambitions didn’t stop there. Despite his challenges as a newcomer, he completed an MBA from Utica University and is now a graduate student at Harvard, specializing in business and policy. However, his aspirations extend beyond personal success; he is committed to giving back to his community and fellow refugees.
This commitment led him to found Chula, a platform that fosters collaboration between local farmers, consumers, and cooks, focusing on empowering refugees and immigrants with farming knowledge. Through Chula, Ujj has created a network of partnerships, bringing high-quality products to the market while championing diversity and inclusion.
The impact of Chula is evident in its growing user base, with 126 individuals deeply engaged in supporting local initiatives out of 460 downloads. From locally sourced Ghee (sold more than 230lbs in three months) to honey produced by Iraqi refugees on local farmland, every product tells a story of collaboration and empowerment. Notably, their frozen Nepali momos, made with locally sourced ingredients, have been a hit, with 200 packets sold in just one month.
As we celebrate Refugee Day, let us draw inspiration from Ujj’s journey – a testament to the resilience, innovation, and strength of refugees worldwide. His story reminds us that with determination, collaboration, and support, refugees can not only rebuild their lives but also enrich the communities they become a part of.
