There’s no better Saturday than one that starts at the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market and ends with a tranquil picnic at Brookwood Point, two of Cooperstown’s hidden gems that offer a delightful mix of local flavors, scenic beauty, and family-friendly activities. I gather my six and eight-year-old, a cloth bag with some funky design, and the quilt my mother-in-law made us, and head to Cooperstown.

Nestled behind a charming alley in downtown Cooperstown, the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the best of what greater Cooperstown has to offer. A local musician warms the relaxed atmosphere.

After filling your bag with market goodies, take a short five-minute drive up Route 80 to Brookwood Point, one of Cooperstown’s best-kept secrets. This protected conservation area, managed by the Otsego Land Trust, offers a serene escape with breathtaking views of Otsego Lake.
As you enter the elegant gates, keep an eye out for the bald eagles that nest in the area – a thrilling sight for nature lovers of all ages. Brookwood Point is open daily from dawn to dusk, providing free access to its beautifully maintained gardens, walking paths, and lakefront views.
Strolling down the path and down the steps into the gardens feels like stepping back in time – an immediate hush falls over me, and my kiddos run off to find the baby bunnies and chipmunks that like to scurry around the statues in the lower garden. I lay out our blanket in the lower garden, knowing that snacking will be a set of brief “hi mama” moments, while they explore with freedom the hidden rows, path down to the lake, and open grass areas provide. I revel in the quiet clanging of the sailboats on the lake, and the magnificent views of Cooperstown and its surrounding hills. Indeed, Cooper was right – the lake really does glimmer.
